World Lion Day is observed annually on August 10 to raise awareness about the conservation and protection of lions. The day was established in 2013 by environmentalists Dereck and Beverly Joubert, founders of the Big Cat Initiative.
Here are five places in India to witness the majestic ‘king of the jungle’.
Gir National Park is the only place outside of Africa where you may view a lion in its natural habitat. Gir lions are magnificent creatures, measuring an average of 2.75 metres in length.
Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary in Rajasthan is another destination for admiring the magnificence of roaring lions. An initiative to reintroduce Asiatic Lions is currently ongoing here.
The Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary, situated approximately 200 km from Gwalior, is located in the dense forests of Madhya Pradesh. It is another location where lions are found in large numbers.
There are some Asiatic lions in this sanctuary situated in the Pratapgarh and Chittorgarh districts of Rajasthan, however, they cannot be spotted easily due to human disturbances.
The Chandra Prabha Wildlife Sanctuary introduced some species of lion in 1958, but it is a bit of a task to spot them.
