Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern.

It is also known as ‘winter depression’.

Its symptoms are usually more apparent and severe during the winter.

Experts still argue about the exact cause of SAD, but it’s often linked to reduced exposure to sunlight during the winter days.

The symptoms may include a persistent low mood, becoming lazy, a loss of interest in normal everyday activities, irritability, feelings of despair, guilt and worthlessness, and more.

A range of treatments are available for SAD, such as: lifestyle measures, light therapy, and talking therapies.
