Why Not to Eat Raw Food According to Ayurveda

Ayurveda offers a holistic perspective on nutrition, emphasising balance and harmony for overall well-being. Explore the principles of Ayurveda and why it says you must avoid eating raw food.

Aggravation of Vata Dosha

Ayurveda suggests that consuming raw foods, especially in excess, can aggravate the Vata dosha, leading to imbalances associated with increased coldness, dryness, and irregular digestion.

Digestive Discomfort

Raw foods are considered harder to digest compared to cooked foods. Ayurveda emphasises the importance of supporting digestive fire (agni) and says consuming too much raw food may strain the digestive system causing discomfort.

Impact on Weak ‘Agni’

Individuals with weak digestive fire (agni) may find it challenging to break down raw foods efficiently leading to incomplete digestion and potential accumulation of toxins in the body.

Reduced Nutrient Absorption

Ayurveda suggests that cooking can enhance the bioavailability of nutrients by breaking down cell walls and making them more easy to absorb. Raw foods, in contrast, may not provide optimal nutrient absorption.

Unbalanced Doshas

Ayurveda emphasises balancing the doshas (Vata, pitta, Agni) and a diet rich in raw foods may tip the balance unfavourably. It is recommended to align dietary choices with one’s unique constitution and current dosha for optimal health.
