The summer solstice is a day when the Earth's north pole is closest to the sun. This results in the longest days experienced in the northern hemisphere.
The sun is exactly overhead the Tropic of Cancer on this day. The greatest increase in daylight hours occurs in the regions closest to the poles, resulting in the midnight sun that is visible all night long.
