The Postmaster

Thematically, this story narrative is about meetings, partings and homesickness. However, the protagonist's dislike of the village highlights the urban-rural gap.

Mashi

The narrative revolves around Mani, a young girl burdened with marriage, and her inability to return Jotin's love in contrast to an older Mashi.

Kabuliwala

Kabuliwala is about dads' devotion to their daughters. And then there's the terrible time when they grow up and leave their family house after marriage.

Subha

Subha is the story of a young and mute village girl. More than Subha's sufferings, the narrative highlights our society's incapacity to include physically-handicapped people and their emotional needs and financial condition.

The Editor

Tagore shares the story of a daughter's great love for her father in this narrative. In exchange, the father desires to acquire enough money to marry his daughter into a "good" household.

Once There was a King

The narrator wishes to avoid studies and hopes his tutor does not visit him. He pretends to be ill, informing his mother he has a headache. At this point in the tale, Tagore emphasises the narrator's naivety and innocence.
