At the end of each year, Pantone, best known for its colour-matching system created in the 1960s and globally recognised as the foremost authority on colour, releases the name of a defining colour for the upcoming year. Here are some other colours that held the title over the years.

Living Coral (2019)

The colour described as “vibrant yet mellow” PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral was picked as the colour of the year for 2019. It “emits the desired, familiar, and energizing aspects of colour found in nature,” said the Pantone Color Institute.

Classic Blue (2020)

“A timeless and ensuring blue hue” PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue was chosen as the colour of the year for 2020 which the institute said, “re-centers our thoughts by helping us concentrate and delivering laser-like clarity.”

Illuminating and Ultimate Gray (2021)

The contrasting PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating were chosen to convey “a message of strength and hopefulness…(and) highlight how different elements come together to support one another.”

Very Peri (2022)

The mix of periwinkle blue hue with violet red undertone was chosen as a “courageous presence” that “encourages personal inventiveness and creativity,” according to Pantone.

Viva Magenta (2023)

The crimson red with pink tones was described by the institute as an “unconventional shade for an unconventional time.” The colour originally hails from the cochineal beetle which produces carmine dye, one of nature’s precious and strongest ones, according to Pantone.

Peach Fuzz (2024)

The experts have chosen the PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz as the colour of the upcoming year describing it as a “velvety gentle peach whose all-embracing spirit enriches mind, body, and heart”. 2024 also marked the 25th Pantone colour of the year.
