National Voters Day was first celebrated on January 25, 2011. The day marks the foundation day of the Election Commission of India, which was established on January 25, 1950.
The primary objective of National Voters Day is to encourage, facilitate, and maximise enrollment, especially for new voters. It aims to promote informed and ethical voting, emphasising the significance of each vote and the role it plays in the democratic process.
On January 25, 2024, marking the 75th anniversary of the Election Commission of India's dedicated service to the nation, a commemorative postage stamp will be unveiled. Themed "Inclusive Elections," this release is timely, coinciding with the upcoming 2024 Parliamentary Elections. It symbolises the Commission's unwavering dedication to fostering an inclusive and participatory democratic process.
On National Voters Day, various activities and events are organised across the country. These may include seminars, workshops, awareness campaigns, and interactive sessions to educate citizens about the electoral process and their role in it.
On this day, new voters are often presented with their Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC), commonly known as voter ID cards. The distribution of voter ID cards is a symbolic gesture to acknowledge and encourage their participation in the electoral process.
Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) is a significant aspect of National Voters' Day. SVEEP initiatives are designed to educate and inform voters about the electoral process, encourage voter registration, and promote high voter turnout during elections.
