This occurs towards the end of May and mid-July. Manhattanhenge 2024 will occur on May 28 and 29 and then again on July 12 and 13.
On May 28, the top half of the sun will be visible, while on 29 the full sun will be visible. It is going to be a picturesque view with the city being covered in the warm rays of the setting sun. Make sure to keep your cameras ready!
Due to the earth's tilt, the sun sets in a different place every day. If you notice carefully, it moves a little north daily from the horizon. After the summer solstice (June 20, 2024) it moves a little south and thus one can witness Manhattenhenge before and after the solstice when the sun perfectly aligns with the buildings.
New York City is planned like a grid due to which this phenomenon can be witnessed. The first mention of this was in 1997 in a comic strip.
You can witness this breathtaking view from quite a few places in the city, like the Tudor City overpass, the Empire State Building, or any street with good visibility of New Jersey. For the best possible view, position yourself at the centre of the street.
