Lyrid meteor shower is expected to peak in April. It is one of the oldest known meteor showers, as per NASA. The Lyrids have been observed for 2700 years and were first spotted back in 687 BC by the Chinese.
The Lyrids, one of the fastest and brightest meteors, are expected to reach their peak around April 22-23. In a dark sky with no moon, you might see 10 to 15 Lyrids per hour. The meteor shower will be visible from April 15-29.
As we already know, meteors come from leftover comet particles and bits from broken asteroids. Lyrids are also the space debris from Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher, which was discovered on 5 April 1861 by AE Thatcher.
The Lyrids are best viewed in the Northern Hemisphere during the dark hours (after moonset and before dawn). Find an area well away from city lights or street lights. Lie flat on your back with your feet facing east and look up.
You don't need any special equipment or a lot of skills to view a meteor shower. Find a secluded viewing spot, away from the city lights. Once at the venue, your eyes may take 15 to 20 minutes to get used to the dark.
