Kozhikode has been declared as a UNESCO 'City Of Literature'. It is the first Indian city to have earned such a title. The city was recognised in the 'literature' category in October 2023 but the tag was given at a official event only on June 23.
Tourism minister PA Muhammed Riyas unveiled the logo of the 'City of Literature' on the occasion.
The city is renowned for it's rich cultural heritage and has over 500 libraries and has been the base of legendary activities for Jnanpith awardee MT Vasudevan, a Malayalam writer.
Gwalior and Kozhikode are among the 5 new cities that have joined the UCCN category. Gwalior made it to the coveted 'Music' list while Kozhikode earned place in the 'Literature'.
The UCCN now comprises 350 cities representing 7 creative fields: Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts and Music.
The Creative Cities are invited to participate 2024 UCCN Annual Conference under the theme 'Bringing Youth to the Table for the Next Decade'
