Indians did not have a national anthem at the time of independence. The Constituent Assembly of India adopted Jan Gan Man, composed by Rabindranath Tagore in 1911, as the national anthem on 24 January 1950.
The first variant of the Indian National Flag had three horizontal stripes of red, yellow, and green. It was first hoisted on 7 August 1906 at the Parsee Bagan Square in Kolkata.
India's national song, Vande Mataram, composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, was part of his novel, Anandamath, written in the 1880s. Interestingly, it was first sung by Rabindranath Tagore in 1896.

The Indian Independence Act was approved on 18 July 1947. However, Lord Mountbatten chose August 15 as the date of India's independence as it matched the date of Japan's surrender to the Allied Forces after World War II.
Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of independent India. In his 'Tryst With Destiny' speech on India's first day of independence, he said, "At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom."
