HIV Infection

Progression to AIDS

Over time, the ongoing destruction of CD4 cells weakens the immune system to a critical point where it becomes susceptible to opportunistic infections and cancers.

Opportunistic Infections

Individuals with advanced HIV infection are at risk of opportunistic infections, such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, and certain cancers, which are defining characteristics of AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).

CD4 Cell Count Decline

AIDS is diagnosed when the CD4 cell count falls below a certain threshold, indicating severe immune system compromise.

Antiretroviral Treatment

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) helps control HIV replication, slowing disease progression and preventing the development of AIDS.
