From Barbie to Mbappe: Here’s What People Googled in 2023

Google, the search engine giant has released its yearly review and this is what most people searched for this year. The results are based on the highest spike in searches in 2023 when compared to previous years.

Barbie and Oppenheimer

While 2023 has seen its fair share of major theatrical releases, Barbie and Oppenheimer, or ‘Barbenheimer’, were more than just two films that released on the same day. They became a cultural phenomenon, and unsurprisingly, both were among the most searched films this year.

Jawan

Shah Rukh Khan’s film Jawan not only broke records in India but also became the third-most searched film across the world, according to Google.

Shakira

The Colombian singer and songwriter was the most Googled person in the music industry. In 2023, she made headlines on two separate occasions, first a song she wrote about her ex-partner Gerard Pique which broke records in Latin America, and then accusations of tax fraud in Spain.

Damar Hamlin and Kylian Mbappe

Damar Hamlin, a safety for the Buffalo Bills, was the most-searched person and athlete in 2023. He suffered a cardiac arrest on the field during a game in January. Star French striker Kylian Mbappe was one of the most Googled athletes this year.

Matthew Perry

Many searches in 2023 were also about people looking for information on those who passed away. This year witnessed the loss of beloved actor Matthew Perry, who died in October. He was best known for his portrayal of Chandler Bing on the TV show Friends. He garnered the most searches globally in this category.
