Festival of Lights Diwali is all about happiness and prosperity. People light diyas, candles, lamps and more to welcome the divinity into their houses. Exchanging gifts is also a common practice. However, there are a few things one must avoid doing on Diwali.
Avoid giving anyone gifts that include leather products, objects with sharp edges, or crackers as such gifts are deemed unlucky.
Avoid cooking or eating non-vegetarian cuisine at home, and don't drink alcohol on Diwali.
It is important that you never leave the Diwali pooja site unattended during the night so that there is always ghee or oil available for the lamp you ignite to burn.
Don't do anything that involves money. Never borrow money or take out a loan over the Diwali holiday. Never give anything to someone after dusk. Giving to the less fortunate is a good gesture during the Diwali holiday, but you should never give during the two hours that immediately follow sunset, known as the Pradosh Kaal.
Sweeping the house or the pooja location right away after the pooja will negate the merits and blessings that you have gained.
