There are no McDonald’s restaurants in Afghanistan. The fast-food chain closed its last restaurant in the South-Asian country in 2002, citing ‘economic and political reasons’. Furthermore, after the Taliban takeover, it seems impossible for the food chain to make a comeback in the country.
Despite the popularity of food chain outlets like Pizza Hut and KFC, Bangladesh has no McDonald’s restaurant at the moment. The company’s website also says it has no plans to open its restaurants in the foreseeable future.
North Korea has no McDonald’s outlet as it wouldn’t allow any ‘imperialist country’s company’. Also, the company said that North Korea is not a good place for business due to a lack of demand.
Until 2009, Iceland had three McDonald’s branches. However, the financial crisis and collapse of the currency that year caused the company to pull out. Big bosses also cited difficulty in working due to the small population.
With relations rocky between Iran and the United States, franchises like McDonald’s cannot operate in Iran due to Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctions.
