Cat Safety 101: Household Items That Are Toxic For Your Kitty

Cats are curious creatures, and sometimes this curiosity puts them in danger. If you suspect your cat has ingested something toxic, contact your veterinarian immediately. Here is a list of common items that can be harmful or even deadly to your feline friend.

Plants

Some plants can be dangerous for your kitty. Lilies can cause kidney failure; Azaleas, Rhododendrons can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, and potential heart issues.

Human Medications

Remember, always consult a veterinarian before giving your cat any medicines. Common medicines like Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can cause severe damage to red blood cells and the liver. Ibuprofen and aspirin can lead to gastrointestinal issues and kidney failure.

Household Chemicals

Cats are basically babies, so they must be kept away from household cleaners, especially those containing bleach, which can be harmful if ingested or if your cat comes into contact with them.

Alcohol

Even a small amount can cause intoxication, leading to vomiting, coordination problems, and even coma.

Caffeine

Found in coffee, tea, and certain sodas, can cause heart palpitations, restlessness, and in severe cases, death.

Essential Oils

Certain essential oils, such as tea tree oil, can be toxic to cats if ingested or applied to their skin.

Grapes and Raisins

Not just grapes, but raisins too can cause kidney failure in cats.

Onions and Garlic

Common ingredients in human food, especially in India, onions and garlic can lead to damage to red blood cells, causing anaemia.

Chocolate

Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to cats and can cause heart issues.
