In 2019, researchers found the oldest tree in China, a Qilian juniper in the country’s Qinghai province. The tree is said to be 2,230 years old as of 2009.
General Sherman is a giant sequoia tree located in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park in California’s Tulare County and is around 2,500 years old. The volume of its trunk also makes it the largest non-clonal tree by volume in the world.
The researchers announced the discovery of a 2,624-year-old bald cypress, in 2019. The unnamed tree is the oldest known living tree in eastern North America and sits somewhere along North Carolina’s Black River.
Located in a small churchyard in the Llangernyw village in North Wales, the Llangernyw Yew is said to be at least 4,000 years old. It is believed that the tree was planted sometime in the prehistoric Bronze Age.
Sarv-e Abarqu also known as the Zoroastrian Sarv is a cypress tree located in Iran’s Yazd province. The tree is estimated to be at least 4,000 years old and is believed to be the oldest living thing in Asia.
Methuselah, an ancient bristlecone pine commonly referred to as the oldest living tree in the world, was 4,789 years old when examined in 1957. As of 2024, it is a 4,856-year-old tree growing high in the White Mountains of Inyo County in eastern California.
Prometheus, a Great Basin bristlecone pine in the US state of Nevada’s Wheeler Peak is said to have lived close to 5,000 years before it was cut down in 1964 and remains the longest-lived tree definitively documented.
