A recent poll found that in England and Wales, a disturbingly significant number of human resource managers believe men are better suited to top jobs. This bias, as per experts, contributes to gender pay gap. Here are the top countries where women continue to face the ‘glass ceiling’:
Of the 146 countries evaluated by World Economic Forum (WEF) for its 2023 Global Gender Gap report, Afghanistan emerged as the worst place for women professionals. Since the Taliban took over the country in 2021, conditions for girls and women dipped further significantly.
Sub-Saharan nation Chad is ranked 145. This is even further down from its 2022 rank of 142.
Algeria too fared worse and saw its rank dip as it fell to position 144 from the earlier 140.
Iran maintained its position at 143 overall, as the share of ministerial positions held by women has dropped in since 2022.
South Asian nation of Pakistan saw its scores rise marginally, as its position improved to 142 from earlier 145.
Mali is another sub-Saharan nation that features among the lowest performing countries in terms of gender pay parity. It maintained its 2022 rank of 141.
