In comparison to petrol and diesel cars, in which fuel tank gets filled in seconds, one needs to stop for an ample amount of time to charge an electric vehicle (EV). Even the EVs, which have fast charging, will require a public fast charger.
Similar to any other battery that people use in their daily lives, the lithium-ion batteries which are used in EVs also have limited longevity. The batteries are likely to last for 10 to 12 years and then will need to be changed.
Petrol and diesel cars can run around 800 km after a full tank, however, electric vehicles’ range is limited to 400 km even with a fully charged battery.
The EVs have a higher initial purchase price compared to petrol and diesel cars and two-wheelers. The surge in price is mainly due to high-priced lithium-ion batteries installed in the vehicles.
Although EVs are known to be zero emission vehicles, the energy that is used to charge them may not be clean. In countries like India, non-renewable energy, which is produced by coal plants, is mainly used for recharging EVs.
As EVs are still a new technology, people face a shortage of trained workforce in local workshops for repair and upkeep of these vehicles. Hence, the people owning EVs remain mainly depend on the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) workshops.
Since it is still a new technology which is being adopted by car makers, there is an evident shortage of public charging stations.
