Considered one of the deadliest maritime disasters in the history of the United States, it occurred on July 24, 1915, when SS Eastland capsized on the Chicago River, killing more than 800 people.

Around 2,150 refugees were travelling in SS Kiangya on December 4, 1948, when the ship exploded in the Huangpu River, most probably because it struck a World War II-era mine. More than 4,000 were killed in the tragedy.
SS Sultana exploded on April 27, 1865, on the Mississippi River, making it another deadliest maritime disaster in US history. The explosion occurred after the overtaxed boiler ruptured, which led to the death of hundreds of people as many remained trapped due to the collapse of the overloaded decks. Around 1,800 people were killed in the incident.
A German U-boat attacked the RMS Lusitania on May 7, 1915, after which the ship sank in just 18 minutes, killing 1,198 passengers. Germans considered the ship a legitimate target because they believed it was being used for transporting war material.
On December 20, 1987, the passenger ferry MV Dona Paz collided with oil tanker MT Vector in the Tablas Strait, near Manila. Due to the collision, 8,800 barrels of oil and gasoline spilt on the Vector, and the two ships were quickly engulfed in the blaze. The incident led to the death of more than 4,400 passengers and crew on both ships, and only 26 people were rescued.
On January 30, 1945, three torpedoes fired by a Soviet submarine slammed the ship's port side, which was carrying more than 10,000 passengers. In just an hour, the Gustloff slipped below the frigid Baltic waves. More than 9,000 people died in the tragedy.
