Plants in Winters

In winters,  both your indoor and outdoor plants require some extra care. One of the  common problems in winters is dryness. Just like our skin, plants also need moisturising to prevent dryness. Here are east tips to take a little extra care of your plants in winter.

Do not Over-Water Plants

House plants’ growth rate slows down dramatically in winter; this is a sign that they need significantly less watering. Overwatering can cause rotting. Watering plants once a fortnight or even less is said to be sufficient in winters.

Increase Light

Moving house plants into a position where they can receive maximum sunlight is crucial as the days get shorter. Also, keep an eye out for chilly wind coming in through the windows.

Keep them Clean

Closed windows during cold winter months can increase dust and indoor pollution. When dust and dirt build up on leaves, it can reduce the amount of light getting to your houseplants. Dust off plant leaves gently every few weeks.

Monitor Room Humidity

Most of the houseplants would require 40-50% of air humidity. But during the winter season, as windows and doors are mostly closed, the moisture level inside your home would be lower. So, you can buy a humidifier which would keep your plants well.

Mindful of Temperature

Most of the plants are sensitive to temperature variations and thus you must remove your plants from all sorts of vents, drafty windows, or heaters or induction ovens. Always remember that too cold and too warm temperature is not at all good for plants.

Forgo Fertiliser

As your plants are doing everything at a much slower pace in the winter, they won’t benefit at this time from the added nutrients that fertiliser provides. Give your plants a break until spring time.
