Caffeine is a bitter-tasting stimulant found naturally in over 60 plants including coffee beans, tea leaves, kola nuts, and cacao pods. It is also produced artificially. While low-to-moderate doses of caffeine are generally safe, excessive intake can have unfavourable and perhaps harmful side effects. Here are 5 side effects of consuming too much caffeine:

Insomnia

One of the most highly valued properties of caffeine is its ability to keep people alert. However, consuming excessive amounts of caffeine may cause problems with getting enough deep, rejuvenating sleep.

Anxiety

While moderate to low levels of caffeine might promote alertness, higher concentrations can cause anxiety. Monitor your response to determine how much you can tolerate.

Digestive Issues

While coffee consumption in small to moderate amounts can enhance bowel movement, higher doses can cause loose stools or other digestive problems, that’s why reducing your coffee intake or switching to tea may be beneficial.

Muscle Breakdown

If you are unsure of your tolerance, keep your daily dosage to 250 mg. People may develop rhabdomyolysis, or the breakdown of damaged muscle after they ingest large amounts of caffeine.

Addiction

For those who regularly use significant amounts of caffeine, going without it for several hours may cause physical or psychological withdrawal symptoms.
