What is polar night?

Polar night is a phenomenon in the northernmost and southernmost regions of Earth where nighttime lasts for more than 24 hours.

Tromsø, Norway

Located near the Arctic Circle, experiences polar nights in winter. From late November until mid-January, the sun remains below the horizon.                   

Barrow, Alaska

Barrow, also known as Utqiavik, is the northernmost city in the United States. During the winter months, from late November to mid-January, the city endures polar night, with no sunlight for days.                            

Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway

Longyearbyen, located on the Svalbard island, is well-known for its polar nights. From late October to mid-February, the sun remains below the horizon, resulting in an extended period of darkness.  

Murmansk, Russia

Murmansk, located in Russia's extreme northwest, experiences polar nights during the winter months. From early December to mid-January, the sun doesn't rise above the horizon.                     

Alert, Nunavut, Canada

Alert is a small village near the northern extremity of Ellesmere Island in northern Canada. Because of its exceptionally high latitude, Alert experiences polar darkness for several months, with the sun not rising above the horizon from late October until mid-February.
