Nalanda University, an ancient centre of learning in India was well-known for its extensive library, varied curriculum and a student population of foreign nationals. Here are five little-known facts about the university.

Ancient Learning System

Founded in the 5th century CE in Bihar, India, Nalanda University was among the world's first residential universities. It accommodates 2,000 teachers and more than 10,000 students.

Extensive Library System

Nalanda had one of the world's largest ancient libraries, Dharmaganja with three buildings, the tallest being nine stories high.

International Student Body

 It attracted students and scholars from across Asia, including Japan, China, Korea and Tibet making it an early international university.

Diverse Curriculum

The university offered a wide range of subjects including grammar, theology, logic, medicine, mathematics, metaphysics and astronomy.

Advanced Architectural Design

The campus had a well-organised layout comprising lecture halls, libraries, dormitories and scenic lakes and parks. The structures were constructed using red bricks which showcased advanced architectural design.
