In 1969, the United States successfully planted its first flag on the moon during the manned Apollo 11 mission. After this, five more flags were planted by the US in their subsequent missions till 1972.
The national flag of China was first planted on the moon during its lunar landing mission Chang'e-3 in 2013. The flag was brought to the moon's dark side by the Chang'e-4 lander in 2019.
Soviet Union's Luna 2 spacecraft became the first man-made craft to reach the moon's surface on September 14, 1959. The spacecraft, which crash-landed on the moon's surface, was pre-planned and was carrying the Soviet flag.
On November 15, 2008, India landed its first flag on the moon after the unmanned lunar orbiter Chandrayaan-1 ejected its Moon Impact Probe (MIP). Till now, India has planted four flags on the lunar surface.
In 2019, Israel sent its first spacecraft to the moon which sent back its selfies with the flag planted on the lunar surface.
