10 Most Miserable Countries in the World

The Hanke’s Annual Misery Index (HAMI) by Steve Hanke analysed 157 countries based on year-end unemployment, inflation, and bank-lending rates, minus the annual percentage change in real GDP per capita. India is ranked 103 with unemployment being the major contributing factor. Take a look at the list:

10. Turkey

Turkey is 10th in the Index with 101 points. The major contributing factor was identified as inflation.

9. Cuba

Cuba is ninth with 102 points. Inflation was identified as the major contributing factor.

8. Ukraine

Ukraine is placed 8th in the list, with unemployment being the major contributing factor in the Misery Index.

7. Yemen

Amid rising inflation, Yemen is in the seventh spot with 116.2 points.

6. Argentina

With 156.2 points in the Misery Index, Argentina stands in the sixth spot due to inflation.

5. Sudan

Sudan is ranked fifth with 176.1 points.

4. Lebanon

The Republic of Lebanon is placed fourth in Hanke's Misery Index with 190.3 points.

3. Syria

After experiencing one of the worst earthquakes in history and being embroiled in civil war for the last few years, Syria stands in the third spot with 225.4 points. Unemployment was identified as the major contributing factor.

2. Venezuela

Venezuela had two episodes of hyperinflation under Maduro's reign. The country was ranked second with a 330.8 Misery Index Score.

1. Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe takes the prize as the world's most miserable country with 414.7 index points and inflation being the major contributing factor.
