For the first time in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a female auctioneer will be handling the gavel at the IPL auction 2024 on December 19.
48-year-old Mallika Sagar's name has been chosen to handle the gavel at the IPL auction 2024. She also held the position at the Women's Premier League (WPL).
Sagar majored in art history at Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia. She has conducted WPL auctions twice in a row. In 2001, she began working at Christie’s, where she became the first Indian woman auctioneer.
Mallika has been a part of others sports auctions as well. Being the first female auctioneer in league history, she conducted the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) auction in 2021.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is said to have replaced veteran Hugh Edmeades with Mallika Sagar as the official auctioneer for the IPL 2024 mini-auction.
