Mario Molina was born on March 19, 1943, in Mexico City, Mexico.
He earned a doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley after studying chemical engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
Molina is best known for his research on the ozone layer and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). He and his colleague F. Sherwood Rowland published a paper highlighting the risks of CFCs to the ozone layer in 1974.
Their efforts eventually resulted in the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty designed to reduce the production of ozone-depleting substances.
Molina was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995 for his work on atmospheric chemistry
He was the first scientist of Mexican origin to receive the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Molina was a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of California, San Diego
Molina conducted research on air pollution, global warming, and sustainable development in addition to atmospheric chemistry.
