8 Most Distant Human-Made Objects in Space

Voyager 1

Launched on September 5, 1977, Voyager 1 is currently about 14.5 billion miles (23.3 billion kilometres) away from Earth. It is the farthest human-made object from Earth.

Voyager 2

Launched on August 20, 1977, Voyager 2 is currently about 12 billion miles (19.3 billion kilometres) away from Earth. It is the second farthest human-made object from Earth.

Pioneer 10

Launched on March 2, 1972, Pioneer 10 is currently about 11 billion miles (17.7 billion kilometres) away from Earth. It was the first spacecraft to fly past Jupiter and the first to leave the solar system.

Pioneer 11

Launched on April 5, 1973, Pioneer 11 is currently about 9 billion miles (14.5 billion kilometres) away from Earth. It was the second spacecraft to fly past Jupiter and the first to fly past Saturn.

New Horizons

Launched on January 19, 2006, New Horizons is currently about 4.3 billion miles (6.9 billion kilometres) away from Earth. It is the fastest human-made object ever launched and the first spacecraft to fly past Pluto.

Cassini

Launched on October 15, 1997, Cassini entered orbit around Saturn in 2004 and continued to explore the planet and its moons until it plunged into Saturn’s atmosphere in 2017. It is currently about 3.6 billion miles (5.8 billion kilometres) away from Earth.

Huygens

Huygens was a probe that was released from the Cassini spacecraft in 2005. It landed on the surface of Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, in 2005 and sent back images and data for about an hour before its batteries died.

Rosetta

Rosetta was a spacecraft that orbited and landed on Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko in 2014. It was the first spacecraft to successfully land on a comet. Rosetta is currently about 2.2 billion miles (3.6 billion kilometres) away from Earth.
