Proxima Centauri is the closest star known to us, located roughly 4.24 light-years from Sun. It is a red dwarf, the most common type of star found in the Milky Way.
Proxima Centauri has siblings and they are Alpha Centauri A and B, located in the same Alpha Centauri three-star system. They are slightly farther away than Proxima, at about 4.37 light-years.
Another red dwarf, Barnard's Star is located 5.96 light-years from Earth. It was discovered by American astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard.
