Things To Avoid: Protecting Animals From Summer Heat

Summers are upon us, and with it the heat that can harm not just us humans but also animals around us. WION spoke with Humane Society International, an animal welfare organisation, for tips on protecting animals from the heat. These are some things must be avoided to safeguard your furry friends.

Hot Cars: A Big No No

Leaving animals in hot cars is extremely dangerous and can quickly lead to heatstroke, which can be fatal. Never leave animals in a parked car during hot weather.

Over-Exertion

Over-exercising animals during hot weather can lead to heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Keep Them Indoors

Don't leave animals outside without access to shade and water, as it can be dangerous, especially during hot weather.

Hot Pavements

Avoid walking them on the hot pavement as it can burn animals' paws and cause them pain. Try to walk animals on grass or shaded areas instead.

Ignoring Signs of Heat Exhaustion

If you notice signs of heat exhaustion in an animal, don't ignore them. Move the animal to a cooler area and provide water. If their condition doesn't improve, seek veterinary care immediately.

Be Mindful Of What You Feed

Provide feed that can heat up quickly, as it can cause fermentation and lead to further heat generation in the stomach.
