World Hepatitis Day is observed every year on July 28 to raise awareness about viral hepatitis.

Viral hepatitis means injury to your liver due to inflammation. There are five types of hepatitis. A lab test can determine the type of hepatitis a person has.

Consuming contaminated water can cause Hepatitis A & E. Hepatitis B, C, and D are transmitted through infected blood.

Hepatitis C can spread via direct contact with an infected person’s blood. The initial symptoms of the disease are similar to that of flu. Hepatitis A, B and C cause the most damage to the liver.

Maintaining personal hygiene, eating freshly-cooked food, and drinking clean water can help prevent Hepatitis A. The vaccine for Hepatitis A is ideal for people who travel often.

The best way to prevent Hepatitis B is to get vaccinated. Practising safe sex, using new syringes, and not sharing toothbrushes, razors, or manicure instruments are other important steps to reduce the risk of Hepatitis B.

Covering open wounds, using well-sterilised equipment for tattoos and piercings, and cutting down on alcohol are some ways to prevent Hepatitis C.
