May is the hottest month of the year. Several countries, particularly those in South Asia are experiencing severe heatwaves which in turn is leading to people getting hospitalised for heatstrokes. Temperatures in India and Pakistan are well above 45 degrees Celsius.
On a hot summer day, we usually look for things that cool down our body temperature. We prefer being in an air-conditioned environment, and consuming cold products like ice-creams and soft drinks. But did you know, that eating chilli can help cool you down?
In many cultures, spicy food is sought out for its ability to make the eater sweat. And as the sweat evaporates, it cools down the body.
According to Good Food, when we eat chilli, our tongue doesn’t actually get burned, but our brain thinks it has so it kickstarts a cooling process that involves sweating.
