Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine from India, recommends eating dinner before sunset for several reasons rooted in the principles of digestion, circadian rhythm and overall health.
According to Ayurveda, the digestive fire (Agni) is strongest around midday and gradually weakens as the day progresses. Eating dinner before sunset aligns with this natural rhythm, allowing food to be more efficiently digested.
Ayurveda emphasises living in harmony with natural cycles, including the circadian rhythm that regulates various bodily functions. Eating early supports this rhythm by ensuring that the body’s metabolic processes are in sync with daylight hours.
Late-night eating can lead to undigested food remaining in the stomach overnight, which may cause digestive issues such as indigestion, acid reflux, and weight gain. By eating before sunset, the body has ample time to digest the meal before bedtime.
A heavy or late dinner can interfere with sleep quality. Undigested food can cause discomfort and disrupt sleep patterns. Eating earlier ensures that the stomach is relatively empty by the time you go to bed, promoting restful sleep.
The body’s natural detoxification processes are more active during the night. Eating early ensures that digestion is completed before these processes begin, allowing the body to focus on detoxification and repair during sleep.
