Intermittent fasting is an eating method that switches between fasting and eating on a specific schedule. Research has shown that intermittent fasting is a way to manage weight and prevent weight gain. But how safe is it?
Intermittent fasting has many benefits including weight loss, improved insulin sensitivity and blood sugar, and a decreased risk for heart disease.
Despite the benefits, intermittent fasting has risks and side effects. The most common side effects are hunger, headaches, and frequent mood swings.
One of the greatest risks associated with intermittent fasting is malnutrition. This method of eating might be dangerous for people suffering from certain conditions such as diabetes. According to Harvard Medical School, some people who take medications for blood pressure or heart disease also may be more prone to imbalances of sodium, potassium, and other minerals during longer-than-normal periods of fasting.
