In conversation with WION, Dr Usha V, an Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Apollo Clinic, Chennai shared some important tips for expecting mothers on how to battle the heat. This is how you can keep yourself and your baby safe from the heat.

Shade is Good

Opt for indoor activities during peak heat hours to minimise exposure to extreme temperatures, prioritising outings during early morning or late evenings when it's cooler.

If Going Out in the Sun

Regularly apply skin care lotions for added sun protection and safeguard against heat-related skin issues. While going out, shield yourself from the sun's rays with an umbrella.

What You Wear Matters

Dress comfortably in lightweight, breathable cotton attire.

Good Hydration

Prioritise hydration through the consumption of natural, non-refrigerated drinks like buttermilk, tender coconut water, and lemon water with jaggery. Avoid very cool, refrigerated drinks in this scorching heat. Pregnant women should be especially mindful of staying hydrated to mitigate the risk of urinary problems during heat waves.

It Is About What You Eat

To support both pregnancy and overall well-being, embrace a diet rich in fruits, and vegetables and avoid spicy foods. Incorporate plenty of fruits and soft, easily digestible foods into your diet to support hydration and overall well-being, especially during pregnancy.
