What is Volume Eating?

A smart approach to food consumption, volume eating allows you to indulge in larger portions while keeping calorie intake in check. Volume eating challenges the notion that a food's weight directly determines its calorie content, according to online healthcare provider Juniper. Rather, it emphasises that the various macronutrients in food contribute to its calorie count.

High in Volume But Low in Calories

Volume eating involves opting for foods that are high in volume but low in calories.

What are High-Volume Foods?

High-volume foods have low-calorie density. This means they deliver fewer calories per unit of weight or volume. Juniper states that a few examples of high-volume foods are fruits and vegetables like cucumbers, lettuce and watermelon as well as broth-based soups and water-heavy fruits.

The Pros and Cons

One of the biggest pros of volume eating is that it can aid in weight management. High-volume foods can promote feelings of fullness and satiety. Most such foods are packed with essential nutrients. But the cons here are a limited variety of foods and digestive discomfort. Volume eating can sometimes be challenging in social situations or dining out.
