What Is Gluten?

Gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, has gained considerable attention in recent years. Some people are allergic to gluten, but otherwise also it might cause certain adverse reactions for other individuals.

Celiac Disease

Gluten can trigger an immune response in individuals with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder characterised by severe gastrointestinal symptoms, nutrient malabsorption, and damage to the small intestine lining.

Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS)

Some people experience symptoms similar to those of celiac disease when consuming gluten despite testing negative for the condition. It is known as non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

Inflammation

Gluten consumption can increase inflammation in the body, which may contribute to various chronic diseases such as arthritis, autoimmune disorders, and inflammatory bowel diseases.

Digestive Issues

Even in individuals without celiac disease or NCGS, gluten consumption may lead to digestive issues such as bloating, gas, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain.

Nutrient Absorption

Gluten may interfere with nutrient absorption in the small intestine, potentially leading to deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals like iron, calcium, and B vitamins.

Brain Health

Some studies suggest that gluten may negatively impact brain health and cognitive function, potentially exacerbating symptoms in individuals with conditions like ADHD, autism, and schizophrenia.
