Acid Reflux and Heartburn

Acid reflux happens when your stomach acid backs up into your oesophagus. The most common symptom of acid reflux is a burning sensation in your chest, known as heartburn. It is better to seek medical help in such cases, but here are some lifestyle changes that might help in avoiding acid reflux.

Don't Go to Bed With Full Stomach

Eat meals at least 2 to 3 hours before lying down. This will allow food to digest well and get out of your stomach, maintaining acid levels.

Eat Slowly and Avoid Overeating

Eat smaller portions at mealtimes and eat slowly by taking smaller bites. It is better to eat smaller meals more frequently than eating big-course meals.

Quit Smoking

The nicotine in cigarettes can weaken a part of your body called your lower oesophageal sphincter which controls the opening between your oesophagus and your stomach. It is best to stop smoking altogether.

Avoid Alcohol

Avoid alcohol as well, if possible. If you want to unwind after a stressful day, try exercising, walking, meditation, stretching, or deep breathing instead of a drink.

Lose Excess Weight

Shed those extra pounds and wear loose-fitting clothing. These are simple lifestyle changes that reduce the pressure on your abdomen, making the process of digestion easier.

Avoid Trigger Foods

Avoid foods and drinks that can bring on heartburn symptoms, like foods rich in high fat. It is advised to avoid onions, citrus fruits or juices, tomatoes, chocolate and peppermint, as they can cause heartburn.
