Osteoporosis is a condition characterised by weak bones. It is common in older adults but can be prevented. Here are some simple ways to prevent osteoporosis.

Consume an essential amount of calcium

Calcium is stored in the bones and if enough calcium is not consumed, the body starts to take it from bones which makes them weak. Therefore, consuming calcium is very important to prevent osteoporosis.

Exercise daily

Exercising impacts the bones through all stages of life. According to a study, exercises including running, dancing, fast walking, weight lifting, and a lot more are the best defence against osteoporosis.

Increase protein intake

The International Osteoporosis Foundation suggests that higher protein intake is connected to higher bone density, slow rate of bone loss, and less risk of fracture. Older adults who don't consume adequate amounts of protein have a higher risk of muscle weakness.

Get sufficient vitamin D

The body absorbs vitamin D through sunlight and food. The body gets maximum amounts of vitamin D from sunlight because there are very few foods that contain the vitamin. Foods like milk, cereals, yoghurt, and fatty fish have high vitamin D content.

Limit alcohol consumption

Alcohol has adverse effects on the balance of calcium in the body which impacts bone health. Alcohol also weakens the body’s ability to produce vitamin D when exposed to sunlight.
