There is a lot of confusion about whether it is safe for pregnant women to have papaya. It is said that ripe papaya is good for women who are expecting, but unripe papaya can prove to be fatal:
Unripe Papaya contains latex, which pregnant women should avoid at all costs.
1. Latex may trigger uterine contractions which may end up in early labour.
2. Papain present in unripe papaya may weaken the membrane that supports the foetus.
3. Latex is a common allergen that can trigger reactions, which can be fatal for both mother and child.
4. Having excessive amounts of papaya can hinder foetus development. Papain can cause premature labour which may result in the baby being born before complete development has taken place.
5. The enzyme papain may dilate the blood vessels which can hamper the body's ability to control bleeding. This can result in a haemorrhage or excessive bleeding at the time of birth.
