Mustard oil is commonly used in Indian kitchens while cooking to enhance the flavours of the dishes. However, it also has some harmful effects that make it not suitable for regular consumption. Here are five reasons why you should avoid mustard oil:

Harmful for Heart

Mustard oil contains high levels of erucic acid which can lead to myocardial lipidosis, a condition where fat accumulates in the heart muscles, and poses a health risk.

Damages Liver

Regular intake of mustard oil may lead to fatty liver disease and liver enlargement. It can also disrupt the normal function of the liver.

Gastrointestinal Issues

Consuming large amounts of erucic acid, which is present in mustard oil, can result in gastrointestinal issues including indigestion, nausea, diarrhoea, and stomach cramps.

Impact on Thyroid Functioning

Mustard oil also contains goitrogens, which can interfere with the thyroid gland functions and can also lead to the development of goitres or worsen existing thyroid problems.

May Increase the Risk of Lung Cancer

Erucic acid in mustard oil may also cause damage to our lungs. It can affect the respiratory system and long-term consumption may even lead to cancer.
