Salt has been used to season and preserve food since ancient times. It also provides essential nutrients to the body and is important for various bodily functions. Here are the differences between Himalayan and sea salt:

Source

Himalayan salt is derived from the Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan, which is believed to have formed millions of years ago after large water bodies evaporated. Sea salt is obtained from evaporating ocean water.

Flavour

While sea salt has a bright taste and slightly briny taste that is used to enhance the flavour of dishes, Himalayan salt is milder and slightly sweeter.

Texture

Sea salt can have a coarse or flaky texture. Himalayan salt is usually found in larger crystals that are often ground.

Colour

Sea salt can be in different colours, like grey, or pink, depending on the mineral and impurity content. The processed sea salt without any impurities is white. The Himalayan salt is usually pink in colour due to its high mineral content.

Minerals

While both salts contain potassium, zinc, and iron, Himalayan salt also contains manganese and calcium. Himalayan salt is also lower in sodium than sea salt.

Impurities

Sea salt may also contain microplastics or nanoplastics. It may also contain mercury, lead, arsenic, and other metals due to pollution in oceans. On the other hand, Himalayan salt is free from such impurities.
