When Religious Events Became Stampede Tragedies in India

At least 116 people, including women and children, were killed during a stampede at a 'satsang' (religous event) in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras on Tuesday (Jul 2). Here, we take a look at major stampede incidents that took place in India during religious events.

1. Gooseberry (Amla) Juice

(Mata Vaishno Devi) January 1, 2022

 At least 12 people were killed in a stampede at the famous Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir triggered by a heavy rush of devotees.

Pushkaram festival (July 14, 2015)

27 people died during a stampede at a major bathing spot on the banks of the Godavari river. The incident unfolded on the opening day of the 'Pushkaram' festival in Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh.

Gandhi Maidan (October 3, 2014)

 32 people died during a stampede at Gandhi Maidan in Patna, right after the Dussehra celebrations ended.

Ratangarh Temple (October 13, 2013)

 115 people were killed during the Navratri festivities near Ratangarh temple in Madhya Pradesh's Datia district.

Adalat Ghat (November 19, 2012)

 Around 20 people died as a makeshift bridge collapsed. This happened as devotees had gathered for Chhath Puja celebrations at Adalat Ghat on the bank of river Ganga in Patna.

Haridwar (November 8, 2011) 

At least 20 people were killed in a stampede in Haridwar at Har-ki-Pauri ghat.
