Deadly Natural Disasters In India 

India has faced some deadly disasters which caused a lot of unrecoverable damage. From the Gujarat earthquake to the Uttarakhand flash flood, here are the 5 most horrible natural calamities in the history of India. 

Kashmir Floods, 2014 

The flood was caused due to continuous torrential rainfall, after which the Jhelum River swelled and water entered into the residential areas of Kashmir region. Around 550 people lost their lives in this flood. 

Uttarakhand Flash Floods, 2013 

Uttarakhand suffered from a major catastrophic natural disaster in the form of a deadly cloud burst, causing flash floods in the Ganga river. It affected 12 out of 13 districts of the state. The death toll was estimated to be 5,700. 

Bihar floods, 2007 

The Bihar flood of 2007 was the worst in the state and affected around 19 districts and 10 million people. 

Indian Ocean Tsunami, 2004 

Following a major earthquake in 2004, there was a deadly tsunami on the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The earthquake had its epicentre in the ocean bed which led to this destructive tsunami. Overall, it affected 12 countries and more than 2.3 lakh people were killed. 

Gujarat Earthquake, 2001 

Gujarat experienced a massive earthquake on the morning of 26 January 2001, when India was celebrating its 51st Republic Day. Around 20,000 lost their lives and 400,000 were left homeless in the disaster.
