The project name which means "rain" in Hindi, aims to build an underground sanctuary of nuclear submarines. The project aims to house a fleet of over 12 nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs).
The underground sanctuary will not only shield submarines from prying eyes and potential aerial attacks but will also be capable of providing crucial support facilities for nuclear engineering, ensuring the base's self-sufficiency.
Situated near Visakhapatnam, along the eastern coast of India, the base benefits from proximity to the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean, crucial regions for India's maritime interests.
INS Varsha would de-congest the Visakhapatnam Port, which is used by both the Navy and the Ministry of Shipping. The navy's dockyards at Vizag are facing a shortage of berthing space due to the rapid expansion of the Eastern fleet, which grew from 15 major warships in 2006 to 46 in 2012.
