Om Birla has secured his position as the speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha led by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Om Birla was born in 1962, and this is his second term as the speaker of the Lok Sabha. During his previous tenure, landmark bills were passed, such as the abrogation of Article 370 and the Women's Reservation Bill.
The election for the speaker's post was held due to a lack of consensus between the NDA and the Opposition parties.
BJP nominee Om Birla was up against Congress candidate, K Suresh. Birla was elected as the House speaker by a voice vote.
Following the win, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi escorted Birla to the speaker's chair.
PM Modi said that Birla's experience as the house speaker in the previous term would help him function efficiently and guide the country.
