The robotic vehicle is named ‘Pragyan’, which translates to 'wisdom' in Sanskrit. It will gather data on the elemental composition of the atmosphere.
It is designed to function for one lunar day, just like the Vikram Lander.
It weighs about 26 kg and can generate power up to 50 W. The six-wheeled vehicle has instruments configured with payloads to provide data related to the Moon's surface.
The Pragyaan rover consists of two payloads, namely APXS and LIBS, for fulfilling mission objectives.
Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) will derive chemical composition and infer mineralogical composition to further enhance our understanding of the lunar surface.
Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscope (LIBS) will determine the elemental composition (Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, Fe) of lunar soil and rocks around the landing site.
