Bhagat Singh is one of India's most revered martyrs of the freedom movement. He was born on 28 September 1907 in the Lyallpur district of Punjab (now in Pakistan), into a family that had a legacy of involvement in the freedom struggle. Here are 7 facts you should know about Bhagat Singh.
Bhagat Singh was a great actor. During his college days, he played several roles, like Rana Pratap and acted in the play Bharat Durdarsha.
He left his hometown after his parents tried to get him married, saying "My bride shall only be death" and joined the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association in Kanpur.
In his early days, he was a follower of non-violence. However to avenge Lala Lajpat Rai's death, he along with Sukhdev plotted to kill the Superintendent of Police James Scott in Lahore. But in a case of mistaken identity, shot the Assistant Superintendent of Police, John Saunders.
To avoid being caught for killing Saunders, Singh shaved his beard, cut his hair and successfully escaped Lahore.
A year later, Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt threw bombs into the Central Assembly Hall in Delhi and shouted "Inquilab Zindabad". He did not resist his arrest back then and was given life imprisonment.
During his stay in prison, he went on a hunger strike to demand better treatment for prisoners of foreign origin.
He was sentenced to hang on 24 March 1931 but was hanged on 23 March 1931.
