Here's the list of the 10 most polluted cities in India. The air quality is defined in PM2.5 (fine particulate matter) data, used to assess the impacts of air pollution on health. It refers to air particles that are 2.5 microns in diameter.

10. Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh

Gwalior is the tenth most polluted city in India with a PM2.5 concentration of 71.8 micrograms/cubic metre (μg/m3).

9. Asansol, West Bengal

West Bengal's Asansol is the ninth most polluted city in India with a PM2.5 concentration of 74 μg/m3 between October 2022 to September 2023.

7. Meerut, Uttar Pradesh

Meerut ranks as the seventh most polluted city with a PM2.5 concentration of 76.9 μg/m3.

6. Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh

Despite showing an improvement of 25%, Ghaziabad ranks as the sixth most polluted city. It recorded a PM2.5 concentration of 78.3 μg/m3.

5. Noida, Uttar Pradesh

Another NCR city makes the list. Noida is the fifth most polluted city in India recording a PM2.5 concentration of 79.1 μg/m3.

4. Faridabad, Haryana

Ranked as the fourth most polluted city in India, Faridabad recorded a PM2.5 concentration of 89 μg/m3.

3. Muzaffarpur, Bihar

With a deterioration of almost 9% in air quality over the previous year, Muzaffarpur ranks as the third most polluted city with a PM2.5 concentration of 95.4 μg/m3.

2. Patna, Bihar

Patna, though in second place with 99.7 μg/m3, saw a 24 per cent deterioration in air quality from October 2022 to September 2023.

1. Delhi, Delhi

The national capital tops the chart as the 'most polluted city' with a PM2.5 concentration of 100.1 μg/m3.
